What are the symptoms of Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease occurs in people of all ages, although symptoms tend to start in childhood and early adulthood. Problems may come and go, but when they return this is what is referred to as a flare up. The most common symptoms are:
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Passing blood
How is Crohn's disease diagnosed?
During consultation Professor Aftab Ala will ask about your diet, your family history and any medication you are taking. You may be required to provide a sample of your blood and/or stool. To confirm any diagnosis you may be advised to have a colonoscopy, biopsy or MRI/CT scan.
How is Crohn's disease treated?
There is no cure for Crohn's disease but steroid tablets can help to reduce inflammation of the digestive system. Surgery can also remove parts of the digestive system that regularly flare up. During consultation, Professor Aftab Ala will discuss the best course of treatment with you.
