What is Cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver that occurs when there is long term liver damage. 

This scar tissue prevents the liver working properly and can result in permanent damage. Left untreated, cirrhosis causes liver failure which can result in death.

What are the symptoms of cirrhosis ?

Symptoms of cirrhosis will only began to show when it is at an advanced stage. Symptoms include:

  • No energy
  • Nauseousness
  • Lack of appetite
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting blood

 

 

 

 

How is cirrhosis diagnosed?

A number of procedures are often required to confirm cirrhosis such as a blood test, scan, liver biopsy or endoscopy.

How is cirrhosis treated?

There is no cure for cirrhosis, however medication and lifestyle changes can help to manage the condition. If the underlying cause is a hepatitis C infection, anti-viral medication can help stop the condition worsening. If the liver is seriously scarred, the only option may be to have a liver transplant.
