Professor Aftab Ala is an internationally recognised Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist who graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (Imperial College, London) in 1992 with an MB BS. He holds an MD from the United States Medical Licensing Examination and a PhD in Hepatology from University College London, where he was awarded a National Wellcome Trust Research Training fellowship in immune and inflammatory mechanisms linking liver and gut disease. With specialist training at King’s and Royal Free Hospitals, he earned a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He completed an Advanced Hepatology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York from 2003 to 2004, focusing on rare liver diseases, chronic liver disease, and liver/bowel transplantation.
Prof Ala won the International Royal College of Physicians Dame Sheila Sherlock Travelling Fellowship to Yale University, USA to focus on Genetic Liver Diseases which has help build key clinical and research collaborative links between UK, USA, Europe and Asia/Pacific
He is a Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Surrey and Consultant Hepatologist at Institute of Liver Studies, Kings College Hospital, London and Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford.
